Burger Quest: Clover Joe’s. Go for the burger. Go again for the cheesesteak.
I discovered Clover Joe’s exceptional cheesesteak sandwich when Joe was an itinerant food truck on Tryon Street uptown.
Then one day Clover Joe’s appeared in a small storefront at Brevard Court (that’s between Tryon and Church) and you could get a beef or chicken cheesesteak sandwich any workday!
The cheesesteak
I think the key is the crusty roll, which we don’t see often enough in this town. The cheesesteak is enhanced by the grilled peppers and onions.
The Italian chicken hoagie rivals the cheesesteak. The chicken is nicely marinaded and topped with grilled peppers and onions and melted cheese.
Did we mention the fries? Substantial, crispy, salty. Terrific. Get a combo. The sandwiches are about $7 and the combo (fries and drink) is about $10 including tax. A good deal for Tryon Street.
Now, on to the burger (this is burger quest, after all)
The bread again elevates the sandwich. Toasted sesame seed bun. This is not a gourmet burger, but if you’re in the mood for a classic, the patty has a nice char. All the way has mustard, mayo, ketchup, lettuce and tomato. A sizeable sandwich and all those flavors meld.
As the sign says, they cook each sandwich to order. And it’s worth it.
On a nice day, sit outside and watch the people pass by. And these days, you’ll probably hear the crashing sounds of heavy construction equipment beating the ground for the 300 S. Tryon high rise.
