As fun as it is buying a bottle of wine for the sole reason that the label looks cool, getting a taste of it first is the way to go. Better still if you have the chance to do this in the middle of the work week to shake it up a bit. Good thing these following five sipping spots have you covered.

Just don’t forget the seven S’s: See, swirl, sniff, sip, swish, savor and swallow. At least, that’s how I was raised.

Petit Philippe

This wine-meets-decadent-chocolate nook on Selwyn features daily tastings, excluding Monday. The weekday tastings (ranging from $10-$20 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) tend to follow one theme, while the weekend tastings (ranging from $20-$30 Friday, Saturday and Sunday) follow another. Do not leave without a bite of a house-made, artisan chocolate.

The Bottle Shop

This wine retail store at the Marriott City Center hosts free wine tastings of reds and whites like red blends and bubbles seven days a week from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Also featured: Stoke Family Ham and Cheese Boards.

Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse

Don’t just sip wine, know wine. Flatiron hosts a “KNOWINE NIGHT” every first Tuesday of the month, packed with wine education and free tastings at 7 p.m. Then, consider sticking around to get a forkful of the dinner menu.

Since it's Winedown Wednesday, I thought I'd share this snapshot of the #cltfoodbloggers recent wine and cheese pairing. P.S. Can't it be winedown with cheese every day?

The Wine Shop

This shop in Dilworth, which was formerly located by Ru San’s with its Wine Station Self-Serve Tasting Machine, hosts free wine tastings every Friday from 5-7 p.m.

The Wine Vault

The tagline at this University City spot is: “Unlock your inner wino.” That should be simple enough, with tastings each Wednesday that offer six wines for $5, starting at 7 p.m.
