Charlotte’s best crime caper now a movie, starring Zach Galifianakis

The Story

The long-awaited movie about a $17 million Loomis Fargo theft by a pack of dimwits in Gaston County now has a name: “Masterminds.” Perfect.

The Facts

– The fun is in the details in this true crime comedy. First, there was the Loomis guard, David Ghantt (Galifianakis), who by himself loaded up 1,000 pounds of cash into a van, unaware that a security camera caught it all.

– A gang of accomplices met him in the woods, but the money was so heavy, they had to ditch $3 million.

– Ghantt goes to Mexico to hide out. The rest of his accomplices (Kristin Wiig, Owen Wilson) hardly hide. Two buy a mansion in a country club community. One gets fake boobs. Another bought a $30K van, using $20 bills.

– The accomplices send a hitman (Jason Sudeikis) to kill off Ghantt, worried he’ll squeal. Hitman fails. Everybody gets arrested.

– Movie, filmed in Asheville and Wilmington, comes out in August.

The Quotes

– “Is it just me…or is it just weird that they picked a stocky guy to play skinny, pale Ghantt?” — CharlotteObserver.com commenter

C5’s Take

This crime was perfect because nobody was hurt and somebody actually used stolen armored car money to buy a set of boobs. If you want to get all the details and hear from some of the “masterminds” themselves, view the 7min video below. The cast lineup seems dead on and treats this crime as the comedy it was.
