The C5 Checklist: 5 things you should do this weekend | Feb. 10-12

Hello, weekend! Time to make a game plan.

Go on a food adventure

The culinary tour Unwind & Dine in Historic South End is yours for $55 on Feb. 10. Highlighted stops may include a wine bar, a local craft brewery, an upscale restaurant or a neighborhood cafe. Plan to walk about two miles overall. And expect food and non-alcoholic options to be available at all stops. 4-7 p.m.

You could head to Plaza Midwood, too. Don’t forget, the CharlotteFive editors concluded that Soul Gastrolounge is the ideal pick for an adventurous date night. Because what’s more adventurous than planning a date at a spot that doesn’t take reservations? Stop in at gallery 22 (on the floor below) with a beverage while you wait. 1500-B Central Ave.

And browse more date-night choices here. Valentine’s Day is on its way.

Or: Screw Valentine’s Day

Either you’re single or you already treat your days with your significant other like they’re special. Who needs a Hallmark holiday? Join Bob Peters on Feb. 11 at 2:30 p.m. for an ANTI-Valentine’s Day Mixology Lab at Earl’s Grocery. According to Bob, “We will discuss some super simple cocktails that will pair well with your sour attitude and general lack of desire to be happy on V-Day.” 1609 Elizabeth Ave.

You can make cocktails at home this weekend, too. When Bob was on the CharlotteFive Podcast, he taught the team how to make a Sour in Spanish Harlem and The East To West Cocktail. See the process here.

Go learn something about an artist’s process

Open Studio Saturday at McColl Center is Feb. 11 from noon-4 p.m. Catch spoken word by Quentin Talley & The X-Men at 2 p.m., featuring characters from the “Intergalactic Soul” project by artists-in-residence Marcus Kiser and Jason Woodberry. Chat with other artists-in-residence while you’re there, including Rob Carter, Fallen Fruit, Dustin Farnsworth, Scott Gardner and Rebecca Kamen. And of course, check out dishes from The Hiya Korean Fusion food truck, which will be onsite. Admission is free. McColl Center for Art + Innovation, 721 N. Tryon St.

Over at the Bechtler, take advantage of Family Day at the BechtlerOn Feb. 11 from noon until 4:30 p.m., get free admission for kids 18 and under, while adults pay $8. Family friendly games and activities will be going on, plus complimentary guided tours of the galleries at 1 and 3 p.m. 420 S. Tryon St.

Add some music to your evening

Grammy-nominated Special Consensus will be performing bluegrass as part of the Charlotte Folk Society Gathering Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10. It’s a free event, but donations are appreciated. Bonus: The band Cane Mill Road will play bluegrass at 7 p.m. to get the crowd going. Great Aunt Stella Center, 926 Elizabeth Ave.

Get a preview of HousingFest with HousingFest Unplugged on Feb. 10 at Triple C Brewing Company. Justin Fedor and Reeve Coobs will perform at this event, which is presented by The Urbanites, Urban Ministry Center Young Professionals group. Admission: $5 suggested donation. Better yet, you can sip on something in the name of doing good, as $1 from every beer sold at the event will be contributed to HousingFest – A Concert to End Homelessness. 6-9 p.m. 2900 Griffith St.

Celebrate a piece of Charlotte’s history

We’re continually complaining that city development is destroying Charlotte’s sense of history and culture. Why not do something that celebrates what we have left? Head to Twelfth Night at The Charlotte Museum of History on Feb. 11 from 6-7:30 p.m. Watch the Museum’s costumed interpreters as they toast fruit trees and play traditional games in the way of Charlotte’s Colonial settlers. Learn the history of Twelfth Night and take a candlelight tour of the Hezekiah Alexander house, the oldest existing house in Mecklenburg County. Also, sip on cider from Red Clay Ciderworks and Twelfth Night cake in the home’s historic barn. Tickets are $8 for members; $10 for the public; $5 for ages 6-12; free for under 6. Register at charlottemuseum.org under the Events tab. 3500 Shamrock Drive.
