Amelie’s has been booted out of uptown
The Story
The Charlotte Chamber is renovating and expanding its headquarters at Tryon and MLK, ending its sublease with funky coffee and pastry shop Amelie’s.
The Facts
– If you think you can grab just one more salted caramel brownie, you’re too late. Amelie’s has already cleared out and work on the new Chamber headquarters will begin any day now.
– Everybody hopes Amelie’s will find something else uptown, but no word from Amelie’s on that front.
– The Chamber’s new digs will feature glass walls and a public resource center in the 21,206 square feet space.
The Quotes
– “We’re trying to create a world-class welcome.” — Charlotte Chamber CEO Bob Morgan.
– “So the Chamber wants to eliminate street level retail on downtown South Tryon by a beloved locally owned business and replace it with an empty lobby. Brilliant despair.” — CharlotteObserver.com commenter

C5’s Take
What a lackluster ending to such a bright spot in corporate uptown Charlotte. Yes, the employees were non-conformists, and we’re going to miss the piercings, dyed hair and hipster glasses. Starbucks, you win again.
