CIAA weekend wrap: Cam, shootings, stabbings and trouble at the Ritz

The Story

The CIAA basketball tournament, and more significantly the parties, saw more than 100,000 people descend on Charlotte this past weekend. Police call the event “excellent,” and by most accounts, it was. But there were 3 incidents of note:

(1) The Shootings: Saturday during a rap concert with Young Jeezy at the Label nightclub, somebody fired off some shots. Just moments before, Charlotte’s QB1 had been on stage. He was fine, but a woman was shot in the head (not seriously injured) and a man was shot in the leg.

You’ll see Cam in this video, wearing a black hat, black scarf/tie and white jacket:

(2) The Stabbings: Later Saturday, two other people were stabbed at a party in the Oasis Tent erected at North College and Ninth streets. The luxe tent hosted rappers Nikki Minaj and Meek Mill earlier in the evening. The injuries were not life-threatening.

(3) The Ritz: A couple went to the Ritz Carlton and ordered four drinks and sweet potato fries throughout the evening. Their $68 bill carried a curious charge: a $10.20 “CIAA Service Charge.”

The Ritz says during major events, it will sometimes add a 15% charge.

The couple says they’ve been to the Ritz numerous times to have drinks and have never seen such a charge. The Ritz didn’t respond to WBTV’s questions on whether such a charge is added during the ACC football championship or Speed Street.
