Home tours: What’s not to love about living in Dilworth?

Dilworth resident and Arkansas transplant Jeni Reiser showed us around her home and neighborhood for the latest CharlotteFive Home Tours feature. She sold us on why to love Dilworth — as if we needed more reasons.

How did you end up here?

We moved to Charlotte from Rogers/Bentonville, Ark., (home of Walmart) for my husband to work for Family Dollar. We fell in love with Charlotte right away!

Favorite thing about your neighborhood?

My favorite thing about Dilworth/South End is that you can walk everywhere. Latta Park, Paper Skyscraper, Hornets games, Panthers games, restaurants and more! Sometimes we take the light rail, too. The station is a quick walk away.

Favorite/least favorite things about your home?

My favorite thing about our house is our front porch. We love all the porches in Dilworth. When we want privacy, we sit on the back porch, and when we want to visit with the neighbors and see the dogs walk by, we sit out front.

My least favorite part of the house is the fact that we don’t have a garage. Although the walk-in attic serves as a “garage” where we keep all of the stuff we had in our old garage. We have adapted much better than I thought we would.

What advice would you give on in-home entertaining?

When we have company I like to open the doors to the back so we can choose to sit out on the porch or patio. We have a nice fireplace out back that we love to light and a heat lamp on the back patio. I love to keep white lights up out back and on the front porch year round. It makes for a warm glow throughout the year and makes me happy.

What has been the most innovative DIY project you’ve done?

The most innovative DIY project I’ve done is adding a raised vegetable garden in the backyard. It produced a bunch of veggies last year. I keep adding perennials to the beds in the front and back. I love to play in the garden.

I added a gate to the property to close off the backyard to the driveway and the dog has a gate to section off his dog run. It’s much smaller than the one acre lot we moved from but it’s very efficient, easier to manage, and you would never realize we live so close to the city!
