The Story

Charlie Sifford, the first black man to join the PGA, died Tuesday at age 92. Sifford was born in Charlotte and started his career here as a caddy – all that a black kid was allowed to do on a golf course in those days. Charlie was inducted in the World Golf Hall of Fame and was awarded the Presidential of Freedom.
