Fall weather brings delicious muffins. 5 you should try in Charlotte

Fall has been my favorite season for as long as I can remember. The cool weather, colorful leaves and the change from summer fare to heartier foods may be my reasons. The flavors and smells I associate with fall – pumpkin, apple, cinnamon – are ones that I seek out during this time of year.

Charlotte bakers are introducing these flavors in their muffins. They are being creative with their ingredients and combinations. If you hop around the city, you may be able to try each one of these delectable treats:

Pumpkin Cranberry

Who makes them? Modern Muffin is a locally, family-owned business.

Where can I get my fix? Harris Teeter locations in Charlotte and surrounding areas.

How long will they be around? Until the end of February.

What makes them yummy? There are three large cups of pumpkin and one cup of cranberries in every dozen. There are no preservatives and no artificial ingredients in these muffins. Modern Muffin uses non-GMO oil and non-GMO unbleached wheat flour.

How much for the muffin? Four for $5.99

Vegan Spiced Pumpkin and Vegan Zucchini Spice

Who makes them? Whisk + Wood.

Where can I get my fix? Available at Clean Juice’s Birkdale and Stonecrest locations, HEX Coffee, and Not Just Coffee’s Atherton Mill location.

How long will they be around?  The Spiced Pumpkin Muffin will be available through the end of the year. The Zucchini Spice Muffin is a year-round W+W staple.

What makes them yummy?  Both muffins are vegan-friendly and feature a special blend of warm, fall spices. Flaxseed meal acts as an egg substitute and serves as a source of omega-3s and fiber.

How much for the muffin? $3.50-$4, depending on location.

Apple Cinnamon

Who makes them? Taylor at Smelly Cat.

Where can I get my fix? Smelly Cat Coffeehouse & Roastery (514 E 36th St.).

How long will they be around? Just a few weeks because Taylor changes up the flavors frequently.

What makes them yummy? Huge chunks of Granny Smith apples and cinnamon swirled throughout.

How much for the muffin? $2.75.

Who makes them? Sunflour Baking Company.

Where can I get my fix? Sunflour Baking Company at the Elizabeth (2001 E. 7th St.) and Dilworth (220 East Blvd.) locations.

How long will they be around? Through Christmas.

What makes them yummy?  Pumpkin, Granny Smith apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves

How much for the muffin? $3.25

Blueberry Streusel

Who makes them? Neet’s Sweets Dessert Catering.

Where can I get my fix? Made to order at neetssweets.com.

How long will they be around? It’s a year-round breakfast item.

What makes them yummy? These muffins are straight from Ms. Neet’s Aunt Koona’s cookbook — a combination of fresh blueberries and moist vanilla bean cake, topped with a brown sugar crumb topping.

How much for the muffin? $3.00 or $30 for a dozen.
