3 amazing stories about Charlotte tweeners: 2 good, 1 bad

Observer File Photo

Good story #1

– I was psyched to get a 3-ring notebook with pockets when I was in middle school. In Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, all 30,000 middle schoolers will have their own laptop by the end of March.

– Paid for by $1.6 million in Race to the Top money

– The kids don’t get to take them home, but can use them in class to write papers and do research.

Good story #2

– 12-year-old Charlottean Ryan Xie is on “Child Genius,” a reality show on Lifetime that pits, well, child geniuses against each other in various academic competitions.

– His IQ is the 99.9 percentile.

– Ryan even scored an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Pretty bad story

– CMPD believes a local middle school boy is responsible for creating a Dropbox account and posting 75 nude photos of local middle and high school girls.

WSOC reports that as many as 65 girls had pictures posted on the site, largely from Hough High and Bailey Middle.

– One mother told WSOC that some boys at Hough played a game with the pics they called Pokemon — assigning points to pictures and trading them.

C5’s Take

Even with the free laptop, I’m so glad I’m not in middle school anymore.
