Sedgefield Battle of the Grocers: Harris Teeter vs Publix, 2017
The Story
Sedgefield Shopping Center is getting demolished. Very soon. Ely from the Charlotte Observer reports that it’s happening in Q2. The shopping center (and surrounding land) is being replaced with a $190 million mixed use development project anchored by Harris Teeter. In addition to the new Teeter, there will be 14,000 square feet of retail and 330 apartments. Here’s the zoning map (yes, it’s that whole area):
Publix and Teeter will be Sedgefield neighbors in 2017. It’s time for a grocery battle.
The pre-battle grocer back and forth smack talk:
Publix: “Watch me expand bro. You think you’re going to capture the rich, growing Charlotte shoppers? Think again. I’m all up in your back yard flipping burgers on a Big Green Egg and you don’t even know it.”
Teeter: “You think I’m scared. Have you seen a key chain without a VIC card? If you have, they probably give their phone number. Go back to Florida.”
Publix: “Sedgefield is mine, I’m throwing down a 55,000 square food store in this hood. Enough with your mixed use play, I go straight grocery. Traffic on South? Like I care. Wait until you see the traffic in my produce aisle.”
Teeter: “Don’t come in my house and eat from my fridge. See that Sedgefield Shopping Center that nobody has shopped in since ’94 – I’m taking it down. Rooftop deck? Of course.”
Publix: “Have you been pounding too many Baby Maker IPAs across the street at Triple C? You better bring your A game. I’m talking TajmaTeeter game, not that budget operation you’re running in Park Road Shopping Center.”
Teeter: “You best recognize the TajmaTeeter.”
Real Quotes:
“From the beginning, Sedgefield Shopping Center was a neighborhood shopping center, and we intend to modernize it to become the neighborhood center of today with a wide range of offerings to match the array of residents – long-term and new – that make up Sedgefield and South End today.” – Jamie McLawhorn, president of Marsh Properties told the Observer.
C5’s Take
Grocery battles mean better prices for us. We’ll watch from the picnic tables at Triple C as these grocery goliaths duke it out.
