Charlotte’s about to get sweeter with Cupcrazed Cakery’s second location

Cupcrazed Cakery owner Heather McDonnell first started making cupcakes as a kid because she thought they were cute. Now, the baker/mother/winner on The Food Network’s “Rewrapped” and “Cupcake Wars” is about to replicate her Fort Mill cupcake shop in Charlotte.

That’s right, Charlotte’s about to get sweeter.

McDonnell, who opened Cupcrazed Cakery in Fort Mill in 2010, is opening her second location at 1730 E. Woodlawn Road, Suite H (near Park Road Shopping Center) in March 2017 with support from investor/business partner Michael Bogdanski.

Cupcake flavors will be the same at both locations and will continue to change daily, offering 14-20 flavors to pick from. Individual cupcakes can be purchased for $3, though $2 Tuesdays will live on.

So will the business’ tagline: “We bake and we are crazy.” McDonnell’s sister-in-law used to call her “cupcrazy,” hence the name. “I am a very distractible human,” she said, “I will own that.”

Luckily, McDonnell said, she has a general manager to keep her in line. Most of the time. She DID just bake a doughnut cake for no reason when she really should have been working on a corporate order.

But that spontanaeity serves her well. “I’m not scared to put anything into a cupcake,” she said.

That’s why her menu has seen flavors like chicken and waffles, and buffalo hot wings. Still, the red velvet is the top-seller and her menu always holds space for more classic flavors like double chocolate, double vanilla and carrot. Also on the menu are items like cookies, cookie cups and brownie cups.

The new Cupcrazed location will have space to sit and enjoy something sweet. Expect a seating area at the front, with a window seat, possibly coffee tables and definitely a quirky chandelier.

But first: Cupcakes.
