Will Charlotte be paying more for services like Uber, Airbnb and Lyft?

The Story:
The NC State Legislature will look to regulate fast growing companies like Uber and Airbnb in 2015.
– NC lawmakers are primarily concerned with insurance, safety standards and taxation on these new services.
– “We anticipated that this could increase our insurance costs up to 500 percent.” – April Mims of Lyft
– “Are these drivers paying taxes on their income? Do we have a way of tracking that? If not, we should.” – N.C. Sen. Bill Rabon.
– “How ironic, the ‘let’s reduce regulation, it kills jobs’ crowd wants to increase regulation to increase tax receipts.”- Charlotte Observer comment.
C5’s Take:
We understand that regulations for driving services and short-term rentals might be necessary, but we hope the Legislature is smart. We also hope that NC lawmakers use the services before creating laws! The beauty of Uber, Lyft, Airbnb is their price and user experience. We hope these benefits don’t go away due to new regulations.
