If you’ve been keeping an eye on the construction at the former seafood market at East Morehead and South McDowell streets, you’ll notice something new starting today: An unlocked front door.
Even though owner Michael LaVecchia is in Japan touring Wagyu beef farms, his long-awaited store/restaurant, Meat & Fish Co., is now open. Co-owner Dawn LaVecchia says they’ll plan a grand opening in a month, but for the moment, they are open. She’s still figuring it out, though. When I stopped in Wednesday morning to take a look, she told me the hours would be “11 to 7? 11 to 8?”
So, yes, basically, lunch to dinner. They may add breakfast in the future. For the moment, you can buy fresh fish (some still swimming), high-end beef (hence the Wagyu tour) and some mostly-Italian specialty foods, displayed on small tables.
You can also get prepared food. A quick look at the menu showed soups (loaded potato and roast tomato/fennel, $2.99 and $3.99), sandwiches from muffalettas to steak (mostly $8.50 to $11), and sides like Sriracha Onion Rings and housemade Maple Bacon Potato Chips.
The space has been transformed from the old Butler’s Seafood days. Now it’s sleek and contemporary, mostly built for counter service. My favorite touch: Check out the dividing lines on the parking spaces. Fish in a line. Cute.
