Charlotte’s favorite Christmas tunes are...

The Story

WKQC-FM (“K” 104.7) is Charlotte’s only station playing non-stop Christmas music, and it’s hauling in big ratings, reports Charlotte Observer Media columnist Mark Washburn.

The Facts

– WKQC began its Yuletide playlist the day before Thanksgiving. It will switch back to its top hits format Dec. 26.

– All Christmas all the time was a big thing in the Queen City several years ago. But other stations have since changed formats and WKQC sits on top.

— Thankfully, the station now waits until Thanksgiving. In past years, it revved up the holiday cheer right after Halloween.

— It’s a ratings bonanza: Last month, WKQC ranked No. 10 among CLT stations. This month: Likely No. 1.

— Seems like just about everybody listens to Christmas music on Christmas Eve: Ratings surge 582 percent.

The List So, what holiday tunes do Charlotteans love? Based on WKQZ research: (1) José Feliciano’s 1970 “Feliz Navidad”

(2) “All I Want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey

(3) “The Christmas Song” by Nat King Cole

(4) “Wonderful Christmastime” by Paul McCartney

(5) “A Holly Jolly Christmas” by Burl Ives

(6) “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy Williams

(7) “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms.
