Around Town

ABC stores are too spread out in Charlotte. I’m moving to Mooresville.

Have you ever wondered why ABC stores are so few and far between? I mean, uptown Charlotte doesn’t even have one. That’s right, not one ABC store within the I-277 loop. A girl can’t survive off of gas station beer and wine alone, but within the loop, she must. I had heard that it was based on a per capita allocation, but upon further investigation, Mooresville is clearly where us alchy’s belong.

There are 422 ABC stores located throughout NC. Here’s the breakout per capita for Charlotte and her neighboring cities.

– 792,862 people in Charlotte – 19 stores = 1 store per 41,729 people

– 50,458 people in Huntersville – 2 stores = 1 store per 25,229 people

– 26,898 people in Cornelius – 1 store = 1 store per 26,898 people

– 34,887 people in Mooresville – 3 stores = 1 store per 11,629 people ß *ding ding ding*

– 25,432 people in Statesville – 2 stores = 1 store per 12,716 people

As if the per capita distribution wasn’t reason enough, Mooresville also has a soft spot for those of us who like a little grass with our vodka. Mooresville distributes 25% of the Mooresville ABC Board profits back to the general fund for public parks and recreation. The Queen City distributes their profits amongst the “general fund”, whatever that means, and “back to Mecklenburg County” – vague much?

Mooresville ABC Board Net Profit Distribution

– 12.5% to Iredell County for school purposes

– 25% to Mooresville General Fund for public parks and recreation

– 27.5% to Mooresville School Board

– Remainder to Mooresville General Fund

Mecklenburg County ABC Board Net Profit Distribution

– 47.5% to Charlotte General Fund

– 47.5 to Mecklenburg County of which 2% must be paid each to Mint Hill, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Pineville and Matthews

– 5% to city/county library commission
