Big changes coming to SouthPark landmark
The Story
Chances are you know somebody who has lived in the Colony Apartments at Sharon and Colony (it allows dogs!). Soon, it could be knocked down for 1,100 homes, 300-room hotel and a grocery store.
The Facts
– The 353-unit Colony Apartments have been around for decades at the corner of Sharon and Colony. It’s the go-to place when you renovate your home in SouthPark. But it’s showing some serious age.
– Corporate owners have filed a rezoning request to tear the 27-acre property down for a massive $400 million mixed-use development.
– The redevelopment would include:
- 1,100 residential units, a mix of apartment and for-sale.
- 250,000 square feet of office space.
- 300,000 square feet of retail space, including a grocery store.
- A 300-room upscale hotel.
- A two-acre plaza at the center of the development.
- Up to 55 units of “workforce housing” reserved for those earning less than the area’s median income.
– Construction could start in 2016 if all is approved.
– Check out The Colony website for timeline, phases, more details
The Quotes
– “Frankly, we believe the redevelopment opportunity offers a lifestyle more representative of what we’d like to offer residents at the Colony.” – Tim Hose, president of property owner Synco

C5’s Take
We’ll miss this tree-shaded complex. Yeah, it’s old and a tad run down. But we guess it was inevitable that bigger things were planned for that hot spot in the heart of SouthPark.
