5 must-read bucket list items from the “Before I Die” board in South End

It was a typical evening for my best friend Fitz and me. We blended gluttony with exercise like artists mix acrylics for a painting – seamlessly and like the colors were never separate beforehand.

We’d had two slices of warm Toll House pie from Pike’s Soda Shop followed by a power walk on the Charlotte Rail Trail in South End. While it may look like a regular concrete platform to get from Point A to Point B, it’s so much more.

The trail is described on its Instagram (@railtrailclt) as “A vibrant urban trail that winds through the heart of our city, where the unexpected can be found around every bend.”

One of the biggest surprises is the giant chalkboard for people to write their bucket list titled, “Before I Die I Want To” board.

There’s a similar one in Asheville, which included gems like “Sleep with Hillary Clinton” and “Kiss my elbow” in fluorescent yellow and pink chalk. Here in Charlotte we have different, maybe even more colorful priorities.

Here are my top five bucket list items from the board:

1) “Be Harry Potter”: Don’t we all want to don a wizard’s cloak and put spells on people?

2) “Crash a wedding”: This seems to be a pretty run-of-the-mill bucket list item, but let’s think of it in a new way. Could this person mean they want to crash a wedding with a truck? Perhaps fly down the aisle and take the bride and groom monster truck racing? Add some mud and a concession stand and we’ve got us a killer RECEPTION RECEPTION RECEPTION!

3) “Have a big wiener”: Hey, I’d relish a Nathan’s hot dog too, buddy.

4) “Live long enough to eat our weight in chips”: This one is from Fitz and me. We consider ourselves seagulls temporarily in human form on this planet. We would pick at a discarded, even soggy Cape Cod crisp on Folly Beach if it were socially acceptable to do so as a person.

Day 208 of being a human woman: Wrote on chalk board in South End that asks people what they want to do before they die. @shadynachos and I wrote, "Live long enough to eat our weight in chips."

5) “IT’S BEAU TIME”: This person has such a strong affinity for either Bojangles or a special someone that they completely ignored the question. They wrote it in huge capital letters with a circle around it to be sure you saw it from the light rail itself. Or maybe their special someone is indeed a carton of Borounds? Either way, well done.

Were you the sublime author of any of these five masterpieces? Drop me a line and I’ll post the pictures to Instagram and tag you.
