Today’s headlines: A stormy weekend in the Carolinas
The weekend’s storms knocked down some trees in Charlotte and were devastating in South Carolina.
Thousands of people in S.C. were without power, there were hundreds of water rescues and many closed roads, including a 75-mile stretch of I-95.
The area near Gills Creek in Columbia got more than 18 inches of ran, bringing the creek 10 feet above flood stage.
Three people died in different weather-related traffic accidents in S.C. on Friday and Saturday, according to the AP, and a drowning in Spartanburg was also linked to the storms.
In the Charlotte area, nearly 5,000 people lost power after wind and rain downed trees. In Matthews, a tree feel on North Trade Street and pulled down several power lines. No injuries were reported.
YOUR VOTE COUNTS: Election officials say as few as 12,000 voters could cast ballots in Tuesday’s mayoral primary runoff between Democrats Dan Clodfelter and Jennifer Roberts. That’s 3 percent of the eligible voters, and means your one vote carries significant weight.
Believe it or not, that would be more than the 1.7 percent of voters that showed up for runoffs in two Charlotte City Council districts two years ago.
“Calling your friends and neighbors will win this election,” says Clodfelter strategist Dan McCorkle. “That’s how low the turnout is.”

SO LONG, US AIRWAYS: The final US Airways flight will take off in two weeks. When Flight 1939 touches down in Philly Oct. 17, the US Airways name will be no more. It will come nearly two years after the airline’s merger with American Airlines.
PANTHERS BEAT BUCS: This headline pretty much says it all: “Imperfect team, perfect record: Carolina Panthers go to 4-0.”
