How to give back to nonprofits in your neighborhood: Elizabeth edition

I really like the Elizabeth neighborhood. Viva Chicken is my go-to for comfort food when I’m missing home (south Florida). From Elizabeth Creamery and Earl’s Grocery to the Visualite Theatre and the hidden Trolley Walk, you can spend a really chill afternoon and evening in Elizabeth.

It’s also a place where you can go out and do some good. Got some time on your hands? Why don’t you …

… Use your skills for good.

The Legal Services of the Southern Piedmont provides legal assistance to low-income clients who otherwise could not afford it. Aside from providing individual advice and counsel, they work to improve the overall community through projects like Consumer Protection and Employment Law and the Western N.C. Low Income Taxpayer Clinic.

Currently, they are looking for attorneys who can work pro bono. Don’t have the degree? They are also looking for an experienced handy-person to come in and help with simple building maintenance.

… Be moral support.

It can be tough facing a serious illness. The folks at Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region work to ensure patients and their families are comfortable during these trying times.

You can help just by showing up. Right now, they are looking for volunteers who can provide companionship to patients and their families. Their next volunteer training event is on Oct. 12 and 13 in Huntersville.

… Greet families.

Charlotte Family Housing works to provide a safe place for homeless families in crisis. Sometimes all it takes to help is a smile.

When you sign up to be an office greeter, you’ll welcome families to the center and direct them to a staff member who can help.

A very simple but very rewarding act.

Here are other ways to help.

You can shop and donate highly needed items to some of these nonprofits by visiting SHARE Charlotte‘s Give Shop.

Of course, all of these organizations could use some extra cash. Click links below to visit their donation pages.
