Today’s headlines: Jennifer Roberts wins Democratic mayoral runoff
Jennifer Roberts beat incumbent Dan Clodfelter in Tuesday’s Charlotte Democratic mayoral runoff.
Roberts had 54.27 percent of the vote to Clodfelter’s 45.73. She won the initial primary by double digits, but wasn’t able to avoid the runoff.
She will face Republican Edwin Peacock in the Nov. 3 election.
Roberts’ victory party was at Peculiar Rabbit. Clodfelter was hanging out at Jackalope Jacks.

The turnout was 6.09 percent (23,580 voters), higher than the expected 3 percent. But still … 6 percent.

MORE APARTMENTS!: Yeah, more apartments. Can you guess where? Yep, South End. Charlotte-based developer Terwilliger Pappas plans to start work soon on Solis Southline, a 300-unit building that will be diagonally across Remount Road from Silos South End. The first apartments are expected to be available in spring 2017.
The plans also include:
– 5,200 square feet of ground-floor retail
– 400-space parking garage
– Bike shop and bike storage areas
– Clubroom
– Fitness center
– Pool with cabanas in a courtyard.
TEACHER TURNOVER: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools had higher-than-average turnover last year and the teachers who left were less likely to stay in education than those statewide, according to a report to the N.C. Board of Education. CMS had 16.5 percent teacher turnover last year (state average is 14.8 percent). Only 24 percent of the CMS teachers who left stayed in education, compared to 31 percent statewide.
Why? Superintendent Ann Clark blamed reductions in teacher assistants and salaries that aren’t competitive with nearby states.
BIG AIRPORT ART: A 40-foot-tall, 20-ton sculpture by Asheville artist Hoss Haley was installed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Tuesday. Titled “Old Growth,” it’s designed to evoke the presence of a tree, and is in the airport’s fixed base operator facility plaza.
The cost was $265,000 according to the Arts and Science Council, which manages the public art programs for the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.
MORE SYCAMORE: Sycamore Brewing bought its South End property and plans to expand the production, capacity, taproom and beer garden just one year after opening. It will also celebrate its one-year anniversary on Oct. 24 with live music, special beer releases and four food trucks.
QUEEN CITY Q NO. 3: Charlotte barbecue restaurant Queen City Q will add its third location in Concord in early winter. It will be in a two-story, standalone building across the street from Concord Mills. It already has a location uptown and one in Matthews and two stands inside BB&T Ballpark. Queen City Q will open two concession stands in Time Warner Cable Arena this fall.
