This taco shop has closed all of its Charlotte-area locations.
Fans of Fuzzy’s Taco Shop will need to find another hot spot to get their fix of chips, guacamole and margaritas.
All three Fuzzy’s Taco Shop locations in the Charlotte area are shuttered, with signs announcing the closures displayed on the front doors of the Providence Crossing, Steele Creek and Matthews Township neighborhood locations. The Charlotte Ledger reported the news last week.
Charlotte Business Journal reported Tuesday that the closings come amid the franchisee filing a petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of North Carolina. Matthews-based SD Holdings owns and operates more than 100 restaurants across 6 states, including locations of Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, McAlister’s Deli, MOD Pizza and Sonic Drive-In.
A recording at the phone number for SD Holdings’ North Carolina franchise office on Tuesday said the voice mailbox was full and a message couldn’t be left.
Calls, emails and social messages left with Fuzzy’s Taco Shop’s headquarters were not returned. The taco restaurants originated in Fort Worth, Texas, in 2003. There are 149 locations across the U.S., according to its website.
Charlotte resident Jen Sain said she was excited to see something different then the norm open in the area. “I was pleasantly surprised that not only was [Fuzzy’s Taco Shop] different, but they had really good food,” she told CharlotteFive. She said she was shocked to hear of the closing. “They seemed to always be busy. I will certainly miss eating there.”
Terri Compton McConnell and her husband ate at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop in Matthews regularly but had doubts about the location. “Food was great and the atmosphere was good, but things don’t seem to last long at the location they were at in Matthews,” McConnell said. “We’re sorry to see them go.”
Charlotte franchisee Merrill McKinnie told the Charlotte Business Journal in September that he expected locations in Charlotte to double over the next few years. McKinnie signed deals for a total of 12 locations across North Carolina. However, the three now-closed locations were open for only about 2 years.
Fortunately, Charlotte residents can turn toward other local favorites such as RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila, Cabo Fish Taco or Sabor Latin Street Grill.
