Fitzgerald’s in uptown Charlotte has permanently closed during COVID
The bright red Fitzgerald’s sign will no longer light up the corner of 5th and College streets in uptown Charlotte. The bar, which served American fare with an Irish twist, announced via Instagram that it will be closing after eight years in the city.
“It’s with a very heavy heart that after eight wonderful years, Fitzgerald’s will be permanently closing its doors,” the Instagram post read. “We thank you for the love, support and memories made. We will always hold a special place in our hearts for all the wonderful people we have met and the remarkable experiences we have had in Uptown Charlotte.”
Fitzgerald’s isn’t the first business to close in the Queen City — Charlotte has lost several small businesses since COVID-19 hit. Restaurants like Queen City Q, Carpe Diem and Luciano’s will no longer serve food to local residents. Oasis Day Spa and Lemon Love won’t provide manicures. And places like Manor Theatre and Buffalo Exchange won’t host guests again.
Fitzgerald’s first opened its doors in 2012, where it’s been privy to the city’s fast growth. It’s acted as a staple for visitors, evening celebrations and post-work happy hours.
Locals have not taken the news lightly. Over 138 comments flooded the Instagram post, from sad faces to messages of thanks.
“Thank you for the memories! I looked forward to every Steelers Sunday (and Pens game) with you. It felt like home. Best of luck to you all,” said Instagram user Geri Barlow.
Instagram user Rebecca Fitzgerald recounted how important the restaurant was to her family: “My dad has taken two of my sisters who are now married to this place before their weddings! It’s our last name and he started the tradition to bring them there one last time as a Fitzgerald. Sad I won’t get to do the same!! Best of luck to everyone on their next chapter after closing. I wish you well!”
Fitzgerald’s certainly made its mark on the city, and it will be missed.
Attempts to reach Fitzgerald’s were unsuccessful.
