If you’ve ever had dreams of professionally competing in the sport of axe throwing, you may soon get your chance. Bad Axe Throwing, the world’s biggest urban axe throwing club, is opening its first Charlotte location in uptown.

Sam Carter, a world axe throwing champion, will manage the location. You can check it out during open house hours this weekend: 6-11 p.m. Sept. 11, noon-11 p.m. Sept. 12 and 2-8 p.m. Sept. 13.

COVID-19 safety measures will be in place, including reduced capacity by utilizing only every other lane and regularly disinfecting surfaces — and axes.

The brand was created by Mario Zelaya in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, in 2014. Since then, it has opened over 40 locations across the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

“We wanted to join the upbeat hotspots of Charlotte, and there’s no better place to do so than in Uptown,” Xiomara Galves, a spokesperson for Bad Axe Throwing, told CharlotteFive.

Bad Axe Throwing is a part of the World Axe Throwing League, which means if you have what it takes, you can find yourself on ESPN competing against the best axe throwers in the world at the end of the year. Each location offers the option to compete in an 8-week league where you can rack up points to place you on the global axe throwing scoreboard. You can compete in the standard, duals, or big axe league — and the winner for each is determined in week 8 through a double-elimination tournament.

If you simply want to come in for fun, you can do that, too. Walk-in rates are $23.98 per person for one hour. Groups or events can be booked for $39.99 per person and include two lanes, two hours of throwing, a private axe throwing coach for your group and the option to bring in your own food and drink.

As for the Charlotte location, expect a bar area where you can purchase beer and wine while you and your friends enjoy a night of Canada’s traditional backyard pastime.

Bad Axe has implemented COVID-19 safety measures, including social distancing by utilizing every other lane, and disinfecting axes and surfaces regularly in between groups. Shown is a photo taken before COVID-19 arrived in Charlotte.
