You voted these doughnuts as your favorite. Soon, you can get them in a new Charlotte location
If you’re a Costco shopper in Charlotte or stop at the businesses nearby, you know that place is always jam-packed. So, brace yourself for more traffic there — the CharlotteFive Readers’ Choice winner for best doughnuts is opening a location in the same shopping center on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
Yummm Donut — which got its start in Gastonia after owners Charlie Sun and his wife, Janice Zhou, moved here from Houston — is expanding into Charlotte for the first time with the new Tyvola Road doughnut shop.
You’ll want to plan your stop early. Staff members at the highly popular Gastonia location do their best to keep the shelves stocked — even baking the hand-made doughnuts 18 hours a day, sometimes — but the shop still regularly sells out.
You’re also going to want to save room to try the apple fritter. When CharlotteFive staffers took a field trip there in 2022 to present the Readers’ Choice award, they raved about what they found:
- “The apple fritter and the maple bacon donuts were probably the two best donuts I’ve ever had,” KJ Edelman said. “It’s definitely worth the drive, just make sure you’re going on an empty stomach.”
- “I love a good glazed donut, and Yummm’s glazed donut was top notch,” Jonathan Alexander said. “Not too much breading. The perfect amount of icing and glaze. The apple fritter was great, too. But it’s definitely one you’d want to share.”
During opening week, watch for giveaways and specials. For example, if you post and tag on Facebook or Instagram, the first 300 people can get a free doughnut spoon when they show it off at checkout.
The customers who write the first 50 Yelp or Google reviews and show them off at checkout can get a free classic doughnut. There will also be a raffle for 10 customers to win a free Yummm Donut mug or Bulldog doughnut T-shirt.
