Pizza chain with funky flavors, plant-based options is set for expansion in Charlotte
Toppers Pizza, a popular pizza chain known for its bold toppings and fresh ingredients, has announced the opening of another Charlotte location as part of a significant expansion into North Carolina.
The newest franchise will be operated by the Castillo family, who are transitioning from their long-standing construction business in New York to take on this new venture in the Queen City. The time frame and location have not not yet been announced.
The family includes Carlos Sr. and Lillian, along with their daughter Leslie, son Carlos Jr., and his wife, Debbie, all of whom have various experience in hospitality and entrepreneurship. They are longtime fans of Toppers and are excited to create a business that future generations of their family can continue to build upon.
“We’re not only excited to be first-time franchisees, but also thrilled to be part of a company that we are personally fans of and while bringing our family closer together,” Carlos Sr. said in a news release.

The new franchise will join four other Charlotte area locations spanning from University City to Tega Cay.
Toppers was founded in 1991 as an alternative to big-box pizza. The menu features bold recipes such as the Chili Crisp pizza, which combines pepperoni with red sweet peppers and spicy Mr. Bing Chili Crisp, or The Stinger topped with hand-pinched sausage, pepperoni, sliced hot cherry peppers and drizzled with sweet hot honey.
Pasta lovers will be glad to see four types of macaroni and cheese on the menu, including Buffalo Chicken Mac topped with applewood smoked bacon and drizzled with mild Buffalo and ranch sauce. You can get it on the pizza, too.
You’ll also find all the other staples of a pizzeria such as wings, breadsticks and specialty desserts, along with a growing selection of plant-based offerings.
The new Charlotte location will be the first of nine new outlets across the state. The company plans to open shops in Raleigh, Greenville and Durham within the next year and a half.
