Scorpio is back: Here’s when Charlotte’s oldest LGBTQ+ nightclub will reopen in South End
After temporarily closing its doors, the oldest LGBTQ+ nightclub in Charlotte has found a new home.
The Scorpio, which was previously located on Freedom Drive, closed in November after nearly 55 years due to new development plans in the area, CharlotteFive previously reported. Now, the search for a new location is over as the team will reopen in the space formerly home to RSVP South End.
The nightclub will host a grand opening on August 2. “We’re hard at work installing an incredible light show, sound system, and building a state-of-the-art DJ booth,” Scorpio posted on Instagram on July 24.
“This move is not just a change of address; it’s an evolution that ensures the Scorpio legacy continues to thrive and serve the LGBTQ+ community in Charlotte and surrounding area,” the team announced in a statement on Instagram.
“This new chapter represents a significant milestone in our commitment to providing a safe and welcoming space for the underserved LGBTQ+ community and we remain committed to preserving the legacy of Scorpio’s.”
‘We are elevating Charlotte’s LGBTQ+ nightlife’
Last month, RSVP, which has a rooftop, stage, veranda and parlor, shifted focus to become an event space about a year after opening — which will still be part of Scorpio’s new vision in its new space.
“Each venue will offer its own unique vibe and sound, with different DJs and events on weekends, creating a true nightclub complex that offers something for everyone,” the nightclub’s announcement states. “Our aim is to continue to expand on RSVP South End’s private event venue business, ensuring it remains a vibrant and inclusive haven for all.”
Since opening back in 1968, the club has been a beloved space for the LGBTQ+ community around the city, which is why so many are elated to hear that it’s reopening — especially during Pride month.
“This is extremely exciting for the new generation of young LGBTQIA people in Charlotte to finally have a NEW place to call their own home bar,” one Facebook comment by BC Tipton says.
