Breakfast + BBQ: Two longtime restaurants merge into one space in Lake Norman

Blending breakfast and barbecue, two longtime favorite restaurants in Lake Norman have merged this week.

The Egg Cafe in Davidson has closed up shop at 231 Griffith St., and has moved into The Crazy Pig — also owned by locals Robert and Eileen McCrary.

Now, wave hello to the Notorious P.I.G. as you walk past the porcine statue standing guard at the door and order up a short stack of pancakes or a banana Nutella waffle, starting at 7 a.m.

If you hang around long enough, barbecue will be rolling out of the kitchen at 11 a.m.

“Today was our first breakfast,” Robert McCrary told CharlotteFive on Wednesday. “It went well — we’ve got a pretty loyal group, so they all came over and we did some eggs and bacon, and then switched right over to barbecue and wings.”

Earlier this week, a note posted via Instagram read: “We are writing to inform you that after a long thought decision, we decided to go ahead and close service at The Egg Cafe today, October 6, 2024, to start preparing the kitchen at The Crazy Pig BBQ for the transition and combination of both restaurants during the renovations of the Sadler Square shopping center.”

The ownership team replied to a comment on the post, adding, “This has hit us very hard but we are hopeful we return strong. [The] Davidson community has been part of our lives for 19 years.”

New owners at the Sadler Square shopping center have meant uncertainty for long-term plans and put a question mark on whether The Egg Cafe will return, McCrary said. The renovations will likely mean vastly higher rents, but new lease agreements are still pending.

As the two restaurants are sharing space for now, some of The Egg Cafe’s most popular lunch items will roll onto The Crazy Pig’s lunch menu, including the reuben and chicken salad. Plans call for opening on Sundays, too.

“We’re trying to make lemonade out of some lemons,” he said.

But in the meantime, McCrary and his team are doing their best to continue to serve the Davidson community.

“We thank them for their support — and please come see us at The Crazy Pig,” he said.
