Farewell, old friend: NoDa Brewing’s OG taproom is permanently closing at year’s end

NoDa Brewing Company’s first location, also known as The OG, will officially close its doors at the end of this month.

“We opened our doors to the world at 2229 N. Davidson on October 29, 2011, 13+ years ago. In some ways it seems like just yesterday and in others it seems like we’ve been open forever,” Suzie Ford, founder and president of NoDa Brewing company, said via email.

The original location reopened in July 2022 before shifting to become a private event venue earlier this year. NoDa Brewing “wrapped a $5 million expansion at its flagship location in March,” adding 16,000 square feet of dry and cold storage space, according to Charlotte Business Journal.

Director of strategic development Jacob Virgil told CharlotteFive: “This decision was aided by the fact that the OG didn’t perform as well as we’d hoped since reopening in 2022.”

Its lease is up at the end of the year, too.

The brewery, built around and by the community, operated as a community focused, “safe and friendly space for everyone throughout the community to share a pint,” he said.

However, Virgil pointed out that construction around the OG location in recent years has hindered its sustainability. With very limited parking, foot traffic was a “key plan to its success” when it was reopened, “but construction projects in the immediate vicinity are years behind,” Virgil said.

Despite this transition, Virgil is excited about what’s next.

“We have some exciting things planned for 2025: a new restaurant concept coming in the first half of 2025, a private event space in 2H 2025; a craft cocktail program rolling out in Q1, and some exciting events on the calendar.”

And, ICYMI, the OG already celebrated its “last call,” which was its last night of public operations on June 28, signifying its transition to operate as a private event space.

As the company takes the sign down at North Davidson, Ford said, “There’s growth in our future and in times of challenge, we are thankful for our community, for all their support and what the future holds for us.”
