Next weekend’s beer release at Triple C Brewing might not be the biggest the city has seen, but it will certainly be the most thematic.
The brewery is turning its release of The Dude Imbibes, an imperial milk stout aged in rum barrels with coffee, into a full-fledged celebration of all things “The Big Lebowski.”
The party starts early at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 5 (March 6 is known as The Day of the Dude, as that’s the date the film opened in 1998). The brewery is inviting people to join in on a bottle share. If you’ve never partaken, this is an informal gathering of beer lovers bringing bottles — sometimes of the rare or limited variety — to share with others.
These early morning bottle shares are pretty standard for beer releases these days, but the rest of Triple C’s event is anything but. There’s a yoga class at 9 a.m., which doesn’t seem like something The Dude would do (but that’s just like, my opinion, man). There will be a Wii bowling tournament, a nod to the sport that figures so prominently in the film (and prizes, too — email email@example.com if you want to sign a team up).
There’s also a costume contest with first, second and third place prizes, so you can expect to see a few people waltzing around in bath robes or bowling shirts. There will be shirts for sale featuring a graphic from the beer’s bowling-inspired label as well. Even the band will be playing covers of Creedence Clearwater Revival, which has a couple of songs on the film’s soundtrack.
Of course, White Russians were The Dude’s drink of choice in the film. Triple C mimicked the flavor of Kahlúa by adding coffee and aging the beer in barrels that once held rum, and splashed in notes of sweet milk thanks to lactose (the ingredient that characterizes a milk stout).
Several other breweries have brewed beers inspired by the film. Chicago’s Pipeworks Brewing brewed a beer called “Hey, Careful Man, There’s A Beverage Here.” Odell Brewing Co. in Fort Collins, Colorado brewed a beer in honor of Jeff Dowd, the man upon whom The Dude is based.
Like The Dude Imbibes, both of these beers are stouts that feature coffee. There are several others that take this approach, but not all of them. Short’s Brewing Co.’s “The Fig Lebowski” is brewed with figs, honey, cinnamon and orange zest. And it’s not just brewers that are inspired by the film: B. Necktar makes a chai tea-infused cider called “The Dude’s Rug.”
Many more examples are out there — many with some variation of Dude in their names — but as far as I can tell no brewery is taking it to the level Triple C will for its bottle release. After all, how often do you have the chance to throw on a robe, play some Wii, listen to some Creedence, enjoy White Russian pancakes and, oh yeah, grab some beer while you’re at it?
Bottles of the beer are $14 each, with a limit of six per customer. Though the festivities start early, the bottles themselves won’t be available for sale until the taproom officially opens at noon.
