Hurricane Joaquin is lingering out in the Atlantic, y’all, and it could dump a load of rain on our fair city this weekend. It even forced us to cancel our sweet event at the Mint Museum.

The hurricane strengthened to a Category 4 storm before 4 p.m. yesterday.

Gov. Pat McCrory declared a state of emergency for all 100 counties and dispensed safety advice, including:

That’s a good and important list, but we have a few things we’d like to add.

Here’s what we at CharlotteFive will be picking up today before we hunker down to ride out the storm.

Katie

– Sparkling water, frozen vegetables, beans, Moon Drops and a bag of chocolate chips from Publix. Make that two bags of chocolate chips.

– Pumpkin spice coffee from Trader Joe’s.

– An assortment of red wines from Common Market. To stay healthy.

– Flippy-floppies. For wading across sidewalks.

– Fall-scented candle and lighter from Target. Ambiance is key.

– Fully charged cell phone and computer. Journal and pen in case computer dies.

– Frumpy sweatpants. For frumping around.

– “The Goldfinch.” Now is not the time for a Netflix binge.

Corey

– Beer. This feels like good weather for a growler of Birdsong’s Wake Up coffee porter. Or some OMB Mecktoberfest.

– A frozen pizza (or 20). I could probably survive for 6.5 months on frozen pepperoni pizzas.

– A back-up four pack of NoDa’s Coco Loco, just in case the storm gets really bad.

– A car/battery-powered cell phone charger. Because I need to be able to Instagram and Snapchat the storm.

– Chef Boyardee ravioli. Admit it: That stuff is delicious.

– A book. Right now I’m reading Aziz Ansari’s “Modern Romance.” Online dating is tough, huh?

– A book light (duh).

– Maybe one more four pack of Triple C 3C IPA. You can never be too prepared.

In all seriousness, be safe this weekend. Watch for flooding. Don’t drive or walk through flooded streets. Drive safe. Curl up on the couch with a book and a beverage.
