Postmates, Uber Eats, Doordash to the rescue: What to order, by neighborhood
Update: In Charlotte on Tuesday, March 17, Uber Eats announced it would offer $0 delivery for all local restaurants.
As news of the COVID-19 outbreak continues to spread, many residents are deciding to stay home as much as possible. But what happens when you get hungry?
Just a few years ago, we were limited to the traditional pizza and Chinese food delivery. Now, thanks to the plethora of delivery options, our prayers have been answered. In this modern age of apps and convenience, you can now place an order for your favorite restaurant from your phone and never have to leave the couch — except to answer the door.
You may not even have to see the delivery person, thanks to a new option for non-contact deliveries from Postmates. (You can also get groceries while isolating, thanks to Instacart’s new “leave at my door delivery.”) Keep in mind that there may be surge pricing in your area with the demand for deliveries increasing.
Food delivery app DoorDash has also created a fund to help drivers that are affected by the virus or who become ill and need to self-quarantine during this time.
“DoorDash’s task force is actively working to develop and implement a strategy to protect the health and safety of our community in response to the spread of the novel coronavirus, including introducing a program to assist Dashers financially if they are diagnosed with COVID-19 or put under quarantine by a public health agency,” a DoorDash spokesperson said in a statement. “This program will provide up to two weeks of assistance to Dashers and Caviar couriers who are diagnosed with COVID-19 or who are subject to quarantine at the direction of public health officials.”
“It’s great that people can get their gourmet pizza or pommes frites fix, even when they don’t want to leave the house,” said Kara Taddeo, co-owner at 8.2.0 Pizzeria & Bar. “We’re excited that such quick and easy options exist for food delivery so customers don’t have to compromise on a delicious meal on the nights they simply want to stay in.”
With residents choosing to stay home, local businesses will likely be hit hard during this unprecedented time. Ordering your meals via a delivery app is a way to continue supporting local businesses and the drivers, while staying healthy. It’s a win win for everyone.
Check out this guide on some local spots that will deliver to your neighborhood (and likely many others). Options will likely grow as businesses adjust to the changing situation.
