90+ Charlotte restaurants opening for dine-in service during COVID Phase 2
Editor’s note: This is a developing story and will be updated. If you’re a restaurant owner who would like to be added to the list, email charlottefive@charlottefive.com with your opening details.
Gov. Roy Cooper announced his plan to move North Carolina into a safer-at-home Phase 2 of the COVID-19 reopening plan, effective at 5 p.m. Friday, May 22.
Phase 2 will give restaurants the green light to reopen at 50 percent capacity (or less) with strict safety procedures. Restaurants will need to comply with certain safety protocols during reopening, like arranging tables and seating patrons who are not in the same group at least 6 feet apart.
Bars, nightclubs, gyms, movie theaters, bowling alleys and public playgrounds will remain closed during this modified Phase 2 order. This is a more conservative order than Cooper’s original Phase 2 plan. “The increases in COVID-19 cases signal a need to take a more modest step forward in Phase 2 than originally envisioned,” Cooper said in a press conference.
According to a memo from the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association, routine cleaning and disinfection of high-touch areas will be required, as well as an increase in cleaning during peak times. This includes areas like tables, booths, condiment containers and reusable menus. Frequent handwashing is encouraged.
As far as masks go, it’s strongly recommended that all employees and customers wear a face covering when in public spaces. For restaurants, this means providing face coverings when possible and educating employees on proper use. Employees can also expect daily symptom screening and “stop if you have symptoms” signage at main entrances.
Only invite your inner circle to hang: The mass gathering limits in Phase 2 will be no more than 10 people indoors or 25 people outdoors.
