Upstream restaurant permanently closed after 20 years at Phillips Place in Charlotte.
Burke Hospitality has announced that it will not re-open Upstream.
“We had a great 20-year run at Phillips Place in Charlotte. From John Mariana’s Best New Restaurant of 2000 designation and the Zagat guide’s most popular restaurant rating, Charlotte and the region embraced Upstream and helped make it a culinary treasure,” read a statement on its website.
“There have been many great chefs and managers and associates that have, over the years, put their mark of hospitality on the restaurant and our community. We applaud all of them as they constantly took care of each other, our guests, our suppliers and purveyors and the neighborhood around them.”
Upstream closed its dining room on March 17 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the same day that Gov. Roy Cooper announced an executive order closing dining rooms of restaurants.
In January, Upstream Executive Chef Sam Diminich won Food Network’s “Beat Bobby Flay”. Since Upstream closed in March, Diminich has been working on a gourmet meal delivery service called Your Farms Your Table, which provides a three-course meal for $30.
Burke Hospitality stated its other restaurants will remain open, with the hospitality group stating it would shift focus to Harper’s Charlotte, Harper’s Pineville, Harper’s Greensboro, Mimosa Grill, 1801 GRILLE, Taco Molino and ONE Catering. Cooper announced Wednesday the state will remain in Phase Two for another three weeks to limit the spread of COVID-19. In Phase Two, restaurants are allowed to be open at 50 percent capacity.
“We look forward to the world getting back to normal and serving all of you at one of our other restaurants,” read the statement.
