Fast casual restaurant IndiGrille is now open in ParkTown Village across from Park Road Shopping Center. The Indian restaurant is open for lunch and dinner six days a week, offering three general options — rice bowls, burritos and kati rolls (this street food from Kolkata could be described as a happy medium between a taco and a wrap).

Diners can customize their dishes, choosing from a selection of curries, proteins, toppings and sauces. Tikka masala rice bowls, butter masala burritos and tandoori chicken kati rolls are among the most popular dishes. Mango yogurt smoothies are big sellers, too.

Owner Sid Maheshwari grew up 70 miles east of Charlotte in Rockingham, yet visits his birthplace of New Delhi on a regular basis.

“Food is one of the most interesting parts of going to Delhi,” Maheshwari told CharlotteFive. It’s this cuisine — specifically northern Indian food — that he is excited to share with Charlotte.

Traditional dishes and twists

Maheshwari is excited to offer a quicker option for Charlotteans craving Indian fare — and he’s excited to put an exciting twist on some traditional dishes. Take the naan, for example, covered in garlic butter, onion seeds and cilantro. Or the Indi-sauce that blends mayonnaise and vinegar with Indian spices, creating a tangy and sweet taste.

“My mom and dad both love cooking,” Maheshwari said. “I think we’ll enjoy this business as a family.”

With Charlotte’s abundance of Indian grocery stores, Maheshwari is able to procure spices and staples with ease, and he takes prides in the restaurant for making all of its sauces and gravies in house. “At the end of the day, we want to provide good food. It’s important that we make our food from scratch.”

Soon, diners will have a fourth option — flatbreads. “Indian food doesn’t have much cheese other than paneer,” Maheshwari said. “But we think these will be a hit.” Flatbreads are naan-based, covered with sauce and provolone and mozzarella cheeses, and topped with chicken, lamb or paneer.

The menu may grow with time, but one month into the venture, Maheshwari is focused on fine-tuning operations and getting the word out about a new fast casual option for Indian food.
