Bon Appetit ranks Charlotte restaurant in Top 10 Best New Restaurants in the country
Bon Appetit has announced its Top 10 Best New Restaurants in the country, and Charlotte favorite Supperland is on the list.
Last week, magazine released its Top 50 Best New Restaurants in the country online, and the Top 10 were announced in its print magazine, which is now out on newsstands.
“To have this kind of recognition almost doesn’t feel real. We know we’ve built something really special here at Supperland — in terms of the service, the feel of the place and the unusual ‘Southern steakhouse meets church potluck’ concept — but this is an awing accomplishment for our team,” co-owner Jeff Tonidandel said.
The recognition is a rare one for Charlotte-area restaurants. Hello Sailor in Cornelius made the Top 50 list in 2018 and honored Kindred in Davidson in its Top 10 in 2015. Both are owned and operated by James Beard nominated chef Joe Kindred and his wife, Katy.
A snippet of what Bon Appetit had to say about Supperland: “You won’t have to worry about splitting three small meatballs among a group of friends — here, they come glazed in Memphis-style cherry barbecue sauce, and there are eight to an order. In a rebuttal to the trend of ‘small plates, meant for sharing,’ Supperland is a grand, big-spirited restaurant where you’ll need the assistance of your entire friend group just to clear the table. They’ll be more than happy to help.”
The Supperland team members were already Bon Appetit fans: Tonidandel and his wife, co-owner Jamie Brown, said they have often used the magazine’s lists when choosing travel destinations. “This kind of recognition could make a team feel nervous about losing what they’ve built, or it could make them feel pressure that the next place will never live up to what’s been accomplished. But we take a different approach,” Brown said. “We know what we’re capable of, and we want to push and inspire our team to create something even more beautiful. And I know we can.”
Executive chef Chris Rogienski was thrilled, too:“ This is hard to put into words. It means so much to me.”
There’s more: The national food magazine selected recipes from Supperland to modify for home cooking, including the restaurant’s Sweet Potato & Blue Cheese Dip, Baked Brie Bites with Jezebel Sauce, Miso Macaroni & Cheese, Sunday Roast with Pickled Onions and Chocolate Pecan Pie with Chantilly Cream.
