A new wing spot shows plans to open near a former Fort Mill burger restaurant site

VooDoo Wing Co.

After an established Fort Mill burger spot closed, a new chicken wing restaurant is eying the same location.

VooDoo Wing Co. lists 1646 S.C. Highway 160 in Fort Mill as a “coming soon” location.

That address near Baxter is the same strip shopping center where Blacow Burgers just closed after seven years. The Fort Mill location is one of four VooDoo sites listed as coming soon or recently opened.

VooDoo has four locations and another coming in Alabama, and in Las Vegas.

Company co-founder Michael Dagley said Thursday morning the initial plan is for five Charlotte metro restaurants.

“We’re excited about the Charlotte market,” Dagley said. “The first location going in Fort Mill, right off the interstate. We’re really excited about the group of franchises. That market is just incredible.”

The Fort Mill restaurant should open in December. It’s a 3,200-square-foot end space in the shopping center, with a drive-thru.

VooDoo serves boneless or traditional wings in small to large batches. More than a dozen wing flavors range from barbecue and teriyaki to Cajun ranch, Jamaican jerk, spicy PB&J and mango habanero. The menu also has sandwich, side and dessert options.

Existing VooDoo locations have specials like all you can eat wing nights. Dagley said there’s alcohol served, but the vibe inside a VooDoo restaurant fits anything from a kid birthday party to a big game gathering.

“It’s very family oriented,” Dagley said. “We will have a number of TVs. I think in our Mobile (Alabama) store we have 16 TVs where people can come in and watch games. We’re not a bar. We’re a chicken wing specialty restaurant.”

VooDoo sites do significant tailgating business. The drive-thru also is big at existing locations. There are sites right near the Auburn University, University of Alabama and University of South Alabama campuses or football stadiums. VooDoo has done catering at the schools.

“We’re big in the college markets,” Dagley said. “The college markets have been good to us.”

VooDoo also has multiple taste awards at its largest location, Dagley said, in Las Vegas.

“It’s a good quality product,” Dagley said. “I’m not knocking any of our competitors, but when you eat at VooDoo, you really don’t want to go back.”

Chicken is marinated 48 hours. Boneless and traditional wings are fresh, cut in store daily. Then, there are the sauces.

“We’ve got really unique flavors,” Dagley said.

Existing locations also partner with craft breweries in their areas for beer selections, something Dagley expects for the Charlotte market sites too.

“We will have a good beer selection,” Dagley said. “In our different locations excluding Vegas, we’re including a lot of craft beers from our local markets. We look forward to featuring the wonderful breweries in that area.”

Of the five sites planned for the Charlotte metro, probably three and perhaps four of them will be on the North Carolina side of the state line.

“We’re looking on a daily basis,” Dagley said. “We’re ready to grow up there.”
