Que Onda Tacos + Tequila Bar is now open in Charlotte’s Plaza Midwood area
Que Onda opened its doors for dinner in the former Coaltrane’s Char Grill location in Plaza Midwood on Thursday, April 20, with a new look and menu.
“We love Plaza and have always wanted to be a part of the neighborhood. We are thrilled to introduce the community to the Que Onda brand,” owner Manny Flores said.
Changes to that brand that will come along with the new location include a sophisticated look and a Mexican take on global entrees, along with a revamped cocktail program.
New menu items will include:
Salmon with veracruzana sauce, made with onion, fire roasted tomatoes, garlic, chiles, olives and capers.
Ancho short ribs, served on a bed of white rice in a creamy mushroom sauce.
Pork Pipan, crispy pork belly on a corn puree, with Pipian sauce, Cotija cheese, picked onions and toasted pepitas.
Beverage program changes include:
- Beverage director Alex Cañas — Flores’ brother — is joining the Que Onda management team from Washington, D.C., where he has worked alongside celebrity chef José Andrés, specializing in European and Latin menus.
A move away from traditional Mexican cocktails toward fusion cocktails, including a Tamarind Margarita with Togarashi.
House-made tequila infusions of various fruits, vegetables and flavors.

A growing chain
A day after Coaltrane’s Char Grill announced it was closing its doors at the end of business, National Restaurant Properties announced that Que Onda Tacos + Tequila was moving in. Que Onda is a full-service Mexican restaurant, with offerings including tacos and tortas, enchiladas, burritos and even Boozy Mexican Brunch.
The growing local chain also recently opened Que Fresa Taqueria + Bar in Wesley Heights and has another location on the way uptown. The new concept for the Que Fresa brand was inspired by his wife, Paola.
