Cheers! This North Carolina city ranks among the nation’s best for beer drinkers
North Carolina is home to one of the nation’s best places for beer drinkers to live, a new report finds.
Asheville ranks as No. 5 on a list of cities based on their bars, breweries and the drinks they have on tap, according to results published Dec. 13.
To create the list, the personal finance website SmartAsset said it studied 393 cities across the country. Using data from the U.S. government and other sources, the website then scored each place in five categories: number of beers per brewery, number of breweries, breweries per 100,000 people, bars per 100,000 people and average domestic draught beer price.
Asheville made its mark after it was found to have 27.6 breweries per 100,000 residents — the most of any city on the list. It also ranked high when it came to the number of beers per brewery, boasting 118.2 on average.
“But expect to pay a bit more for your beer,” SmartAsset wrote. “Its average pint of beer costs $5.00.”
Asheville also earned a nod for boasting a “variety of beer-related events and scenes,” including brewery tours.
Wilmington was the only other North Carolina city to earn a spot near the top of the list, landing at No. 30.
While Asheville has long been recognized as a beer hub, its food scene also made a name for itself this year. In June, the review website Yelp named the mountain tourist destination the nation’s best place for food lovers.
On the more recent list, the top-ranking city for beer drinkers was Pittsburgh. Rounding out the top five were:
- No. 2 Bend, Oregon
No. 3 Milwaukee, Wisconsin
No. 4 St. Louis, Missouri
