Halal Food Cart fans and white sauce aficionados, you’re in for a treat. Halal Street Food is opening a second brick-and-mortar location in Camp North End’s Keswick District on Wednesday, April 24.

The food: Halal Street Food’s new location will serve its familiar traditional halal dishes and favorites such as chicken and lamb over rice, kabobs, gyros and hummus and pita — with plenty of its popular white sauce. Falafel, salads and vegan selections will join the menu, as well as breakfast and dessert options.

The backstory: Husband and wife team Khuram and Damaris Bashir started Halal Food Cart in 2016 at Trade and Tryon streets in Uptown Charlotte, with a menu inspired by the family’s first restaurant in Michigan, Mi Barrio Halal Latin Grill. In 2021, the family opened its first brick-and-mortar location in MoRA.

“Halal Street Food has always been about family and the way food brings us together. My parents didn’t speak the same language when they met, and now our menu marries together the beauty of their Pakistani and Dominican cultures. It’s a love story and you can taste it in the food,” said Cristopher Collado, the Bashirs’ son and chief executive officer of the restaurant.

The space: The design will pay tribute to the original Halal Food Cart — which remains open. Seating will include a communal table inside, or patrons can grab seating outside next to the restaurant on Camp North End’s new Keswick Platform. The area is being developed as part of a joint venture by ATCO Properties & Management and Shorenstein Properties.

The restaurant will be located adjacent to dairy-free ice cream shop Seemingly Overzealous. Keswick food stalls Bleu Barn North End, La Caseta, Soul Miner’s Garden and SARU are also close by.

“The Bashirs have such a passion for the food they create and are an outstanding example of a successful small business that started right here in Charlotte. Halal Street Food will be an amazing addition to the atmosphere and retail offerings on the new Keswick Platform,” said Tommy Mann, development director at Camp North End.

Camp North End was represented in the development deal by Aaron Ligon and Chapman Chastain at Ascent Real Estate Partners. Halal Street Food was represented by Sink Kimmel at Selwyn Property Group.
