A new ice cream shop is opening this week in Cornelius — and giving away free scoops

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream is opening a Lake Norman area location in Cornelius by offering free ice cream for the first 50 guests on Thursday, April 6.

The ice cream shop’s grand opening event, which will include raffles for free pints, will also incorporate face painting, balloon art and more on Saturday, April 8. Events start daily Thursday-Saturday at 11 a.m.

Look for flavors including Black Cherry, Buckeye, Coffee Chocolate Chip, Graham Central Station, Oree-Dough, Salty Caramel Truffle and more. The location will offers pickup, delivery and catering.

“I have such fond memories of making weekly trips to Handel’s in Cuyahoga Falls, OH as a family to enjoy our favorite flavors when I was completing my medical residency. We couldn’t get enough of it! Now, I’m crossing an item off my bucket list by opening my own Handel’s,” said John Gowdy, co-owner of the Cornelius Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream. His co-owners are Matt Field and Clayton Leonard.

Handel’s has more than 90 locations across 11 states, including one in Gastonia.
