‘Monster’ chocolate chip cookies from NC shop rank among nation’s best. Here’s why
A North Carolina bakery sells “monster” chocolate chip cookies — and they rank among the nation’s best.
Villani’s Bakery in Charlotte made it onto a list of “Top Chocolate Chip Cookie Spots.” It ranked No. 82 of 100 shops across the country, becoming the only place in North Carolina to be honored, according to results published July 28.
To create the list, the restaurant review website Yelp studied businesses that received cookie-related comments over time. The website said it “ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews mentioning ‘chocolate chip cookie.’”
The results were released before National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day, which falls on Aug. 4. Though there’s a day for celebrating the treats, Villani’s Bakery has drawn fans throughout the year.
Some took to Yelp to say that the menu’s “monster” chocolate chip cookies were big enough to live up to their name. In 2022, CharlotteFive described the sweets as shareable, with a slight crunch on the outside and a moist inside.
Villani’s Bakery — which calls itself “a New York-Italian style bakery” — also sells coffee, cakes and other desserts. The shop on Pecan Avenue in the Chantilly neighborhood of Charlotte also made its mark last year, when it ranked as Yelp users’ favorite place to get chocolate chip cookies in North Carolina.
Despite the bakery’s repeated praise, Charlotte-area treat shops missed out on other recent lists. None of them were named among the nation’s top places for ice cream in two separate rankings, McClatchy News reported in July.
