James Beard award-winning chef and sushi master to bring Japanese restaurant to Charlotte
Next year, another spot will be added to North Carolina’s lineup of award-winning restaurants.
Uchi, a sushi-focused concept founded by James Beard award-winning chef and sushi master Tyson Cole, is opening in Charlotte.
The Japanese restaurant, which originally opened its doors in a refurbished Austin bungalow in 2003, now has restaurants across the U.S., including Denver, Miami, Scottsdale and West Hollywood — but this will be its first in North Carolina.
Charlotte is the perfect location for Uchi as there are many similarities with our hometown, Austin,” chief development officer Todd Reppert said in a news release.
“Charlotte has been on an impressive growth spree and is poised to become the next hot market in the Southeast. The attractive climate, low-cost of living, access to beaches and mountains as well as the city’s large international airport, professional sports teams and prominent role in the country’s banking sector are a huge draw for us.”
Uchi — which is translated from the Japanese word “house” — offers a non‑traditional approach to Japanese cuisine with Cole’s spin on signature tastings, sushi and a seasonal omakase.
“Having trained for more than ten years in Tokyo, New York, and Austin under two different sushi masters, he [Cole] and the entire Uchi culinary team continues his path of study and experimentation each day at the restaurants in the Uchi family,” the restaurant’s website states.
Uchi’s Charlotte location will be located in the Plaza Midwood area as part of the Commonwealth development. An official opening date has yet to be announced, but the current timeline for opening is late 2025.
