There’s a New Dawg in Charlotte — and the food cart is bringing the heat
Hot dog lovers will relish this news — a novel spin on a classic summer bite is set to open May 31 at noon in Charlotte.
A New Dawg in Town is the brainchild of Marlaina Blackett, who plans to run the business with her brother, Desmond Blackett.
“I chose hot dogs because, one, I’m from NYC; two, it’s a people pleaser; and three, I love to cook and love West Indies food,” Blackett said.
Blackett’s family is from Barbados, and this will mark her first food venture.
The hot dog cart’s website describes the menu as a “fusion of two iconic symbols — hip-hop culture and the legendary New York hot dog,” and one that will emphasize Caribbean flavors.
For the grand opening on May 31, the hot dog cart will be parked near Zippy’s Ice. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m., with food and live music to follow at noon.
Currently, the menu includes two classic “dawgs”:
- A plain beef hot dog on a fresh bun
- One served all the way with onions, relish, mustard, ketchup and a handful of other standard American toppings including coleslaw, chili, jalapenos and sauerkraut.
The gourmet “dawgs” include:
- A vegan option, which you can add vegan chili onto
- A jerk chicken hot dog, with an option to add pineapple salsa
- An oxtail hot dog.
- A bacon-wrapped LA hot dog, topped with ketchup, mustard, mayo, sauteed onions and peppers, and crushed Cheetos.
A New Dawg in Town will also offer bottled drinks and chips.
