Word began spreading about its closure earlier this week, when an employee told WSOC-TV of the news.

CharlotteFive reached out to its team and its parent company, Thunderdome Restaurant Group, multiple times with no confirmation or response.

The restaurant made the official announcement of the “difficult decision to close up shop” Saturday morning, June 14.

“We’ll miss the taco Tuesdays, the late-night margs, and all the good times we shared with y’all. Thank you for being part of our story — you made it one to remember,” Bakersfield’s Instagram post says.

“Don’t worry though — you can still catch us slingin’ tacos and pourin’ margs in other cities. Just head to bakersfieldtacos.com to find us or get in touch. Keep it spicy, Charlotte.”

The Cincinnati-based restaurant, known for its street tacos and selection of over 100 tequilas and whiskeys, originally opened in 2012.

Two years later, the Mexican eatery expanded to the Queen City and has been a staple in the Dilworth ever since.

Before then, the corner spot on East Boulevard had been home to several other “failed restaurant attempts,” Danny Gassaway previously reported for The Charlotte Observer. But in his words, Bakersfield was crushing it within months of opening with its small menu with lots of flavor.

Fun fact: The restaurant was even seen as one of the date spots in Season 2 of “The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On” on Netflix.

Bakersfield is just one of many fan-favorite spots along the East Boulevard strip that have closed this year, following JJ’s Red Hots and Lebowki’s Neighborhood Grill — which will soon be taken over by Ladybird Taco.

It’s still unclear why Bakersfield’s Charlotte location, the only one in North Carolina, was shut down.

CharlotteFive is working to learn more details.

Keep an eye out on this space for updates.
