New Lake Norman diner features all-day smash burgers and breakfast
Kevin and Christina Smith have a favorite new go-to place in Mooresville when dining out with their sons, Brian, 14, and Tyler, 9.
Fresh Egg, which features all-day burgers, brunch and breakfast, opened this fall in the Publix-anchored Brawley Commons shopping center on Brawley School Road at Williamson Road.
The family members were on their fourth visit to the restaurant in the six weeks it’s been open, when a CharlotteFive reporter tried one of its smash burgers Tuesday night: the sautéed onion, mushroom and Swiss ($14).
Little did we suspect how juicy and humongous the burger would be, with two four-ounce patties, topped with heaping amounts of cheese, onions and ‘shrooms. We needed a take-out box for half of our fries, we were so full.
“The smash burgers have been a hit,” assistant manager Jessica Hall said. “And the Hot Deli Pressers are amazing.”
Her favorite is the sliced chicken presser, topped with American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and honey mustard sauce ($13).
The restaurant is part of the regional Fresh Chef Restaurant chain that includes a Fresh Egg on Torrence Chapel Road (I-77 Exit 28) in Cornelius and at least a half-dozen Fresh Chef restaurants in Catawba, Lincoln, Iredell and northern Mecklenburg counties. A longstanding Fresh Chef is located in the same shopping center as the Mooresville Fresh Egg.
All-day breakfast includes omelettes, Benedicts
Other popular menu items at the Mooresville Fresh Egg include the nachos ($12); beef and chicken tacos ($12); gourmet hot dogs ($8); the Carolina smash burger ($13), BBQ sauce and American cheese topped with house-made coleslaw; and the roast beef dip ($15), which includes sliced roast beef, provolone cheese and horseradish sauce, with a side of au jus for dipping.
Breakfast includes various omelettes and Benedicts ($13-$15); waffles with choice of bacon or sausage ($10-$11); and other platters.
The restaurant also has daily quiche and soup specials; $6 cheesecake, chocolate cake and carrot cake desserts; and a full bar with $12 house cocktail specialties.
Side note: The booths have the most comfortable seats I’ve ever sat on in my many years of diner dining from Florida to New England.
Family loves the varied, all-day menu
Christina Smith, a Realtor with Keller Williams Unified, said she also appreciates the gluten-free menu options.
Son Brian had the breakfast burger Tuesday night, a double smash patty topped with an egg cooked to order, American cheese, Smithfield bacon and mayonnaise served with breakfast potatoes ($14).
Son Tyler had the scrambled eggs platter, which includes a meat, toast and side ($14). Dad had roast beef dip.
“I love that everyone can get what they want and when they want it,” Christina Smith said, referring to the varied menu options and that every item is available opening to closing.
She said Fresh Egg reminds the family of the diners they enjoyed in their native New York, only Fresh Egg is a more upscale version. “And affordable,” her husband said.
