3 new restaurants in Charlotte + the latest on the old King’s Kitchen space

Three tacos with meat, cilantro, and diced red onion are arranged on a piece of paper on a metal tray, accompanied by a pile of sautéed white onions and two lime wedges. In the background, there is a small jar of orange sauce and a blurred plastic cup containing a light-colored beverage.

Charlotteans are sure to find their new favorite restaurant as the city’s food scene continues to grow.

This week, I reported four restaurant openings — and found out there’s a new tenant coming to the former King’s Kitchen Space in the Trade West building.

Plus, MoRa residents can grab drinks and tacos at a recently reopened spot, and ice cream lovers will soon have more places to grab a sweet treat from a local dessert chain.

Catch up on what you may have missed this week:

Taqueria Number 1

An unexpected fire forced a beloved taqueria to close. Now it “can’t wait to welcome guests” again.

Taqueria Number 1, a restaurant specializing in authentic Mexican and Central American cuisines, reopened Nov. 3 in MoRA, a spokesperson told CharlotteFive.

Two folded, cheese-covered Birria tacos with crispy orange shells and meat filling are presented on a long white rectangular plate, garnished with lime wedges and cilantro. Beside the tacos, a white bowl holds a portion of rich red consommé, and a tall plastic cup of bright orange juice stands in the background.

Fans who haven’t made it back yet can expect a “newly renovated (space), with enhanced flavors and a fresh, expanded menu,” the restaurant said on Instagram.

The revamp comes a year and half after a small fire damaged the restaurant, forcing it to close temporarily. Now, customers can look forward to fan-favorite quesabirrias and the addition of empanadas and flautas ahogadas.

Bella Fusion

Charlotte’s newest restaurant fuses Latin and Asian flavors.

Bella Fusion opened in the Cherry community in late September, taking over the former Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe on South Kings Drive in midtown.

A street-level photo shows the exterior of a Mediterranean restaurant named TAZIKI’S MEDITERRANEAN CAFE, which occupies the ground floor of a modern, multi-story brick building. Several cars are parked in the small parking lot directly in front of the storefront.

The new spot serves American-style breakfast and offers a variety of Thai-Latin dishes for lunch and dinner, its website says.

Eggs Benedict is on the menu alongside classics like chicken and waffles and cheese grits. For dinner, customers will find offerings like pad Thai noodles and taco burgers.

Seemingly Overzealous

Seemingly Overzealous, known for its dairy-, egg- and gluten-free ice cream and desserts, will open two new locations next year in Davidson and Matthews, according to a news release sent to CharlotteFive.

The Davidson store is slated to open in spring 2026, and the Matthews store will open in late summer.

Each boasting 1,000 square feet, the new shops will showcase Seemingly Overzealous’ most popular flavors such as Can’t Be All Cookie (cookies + cream) and I’m Freakin’ Out (blood orange with candied ginger). Customers can also expect new offerings including milkshakes and an expanded menu of baked goods.

“The expansion into Matthews and Davidson allows us the opportunity to connect with and serve even more members of our community, and we couldn’t be more excited,” Seemingly Overzealous co-founder Jessica Berrese said in the release.

There’s something new coming to the old King’s Kitchen space in uptown — though we’re no quite sure what it is yet.

A new tenant will replace the not-for-profit restaurant at 129 West Trade St., commercial real estate firm Rebel Rebel CRE teased in a recent Instagram post. It stopped just short of revealing what’s going in the space (and we did reach out to ask), but told locals to “get ready for some new life” in the now-vacant space.

Nearby co-tenants include The Capital Grille, Basil Thai and Cowbell Burger & Whiskey Bar and others.

The King’s Kitchen, known for serving Southern fare, closed abruptly in 2024 after more than 14 years in business, CharlotteFive reported. A reason for the closure wasn’t given.
