Great Eats on the Cheap: Maria’s Mexican Restaurant is a family-run favorite

Family-owned, women-owned and operated by three generations working side by side, Maria’s Mexican Restaurant in Charlotte is all heart. The ship is run by Leoncia Sorto, Maria Sorto and Jessica Sorto: They’re greeting guests, running food, checking on tables and making sure every plate leaves the kitchen just right.

The story starts with Maria herself, born in El Salvador. Her daughter, Leoncia, is mother to Jessica Sorto.

From the beginning, Maria’s philosophy has centered around serving reliably good food and building a community so guests want to come back again and again.

Unassuming from the street-facing front, the sides of Maria’s are adorned with striking large-scale murals by Jose Valentin Ramirez Cardie. Part of an effort to celebrate Charlotte’s diversity by increasing the visibility of Latin American artists, those colorful murals are a peek at what’s to come inside.

Bright colors, florals and eclectic bits of art adorn the walls of Maria’s. All three Sortos are buzzing around in tandem as guests come in and out of the restaurant. During the lunch hour, it’s busy with both takeout orders and groups dining in.

“We want first-time guests to know that Maria’s is truly family-run,” Jessica said. “Maria is always present, and it’s not uncommon to see all three generations.”

Classics and Consistency

If you’ve spent time on any Charlotte food social media accounts, you’ve likely seen Maria’s QuesaBirrias — crispy, cheese-sealed tortillas filled with rich, slow-cooked birria, served with consommé for dipping. The family says the dish became a turning point for the restaurant, introducing Maria’s to a wave of new diners and quickly becoming the most-loved item on the menu.

Beyond birria, popular menu items include the ChoriPollo, burritos and sizzling fajitas made fresh. Naturally, a margarita pairs well with all of the dishes. Not a drinker? There are several non-alcoholic beverages that showcase Maria’s authenticity, including a pineapple agua fresca and horchata.

In a dining world increasingly dominated by expansion concepts and out-of-town brands, Maria’s remains deeply committed to keeping the business feel like the true neighborhood destination it is.

Crunching the numbers

Cost-wise, how exactly does the menu stack up?

“Staying true to fair pricing is part of staying loyal to the customers who have supported us from the start, and that’s something we don’t ever want to lose,” Jessica said.

Maria’s popular QuesaBirrias are priced at $5.50 each, while several lunch specials, like the Chile Relleno, Taco and Beans, come in at $8.99. A plate of nachos starts at $10.99.

Margaritas start at $7.25 and appetizers like chips with queso are just $5.15.

Portions are generous, making many entrées easily shareable or suitable for leftovers the next day; it’s just another way Maria’s delivers.

As a diner, whether you knew beforehand that this restaurant was family-owned or not, the feeling of being in a homegrown kitchen is palpable. The sounds, smells of grilled meat and warm tortillas, the easy interactions between the Sortos and their staff — it all creates an atmosphere that feels less like a transaction and more like being welcomed in.

At Maria’s, you’re not just supporting a local business: You’re stepping into one family’s story.
