When Adam Cozzolino moved to Optimist Park last year, he quickly discovered a predicament when he was hungry and thirsty. “If I was looking to get a drink or a snack, I’d have to go to Plaza or NoDa or a gas station,” he said.
So when he found an available space inside of Area 15 at 512B E 15th St., he knew he had a void to fill. “I’m not the only one who has to go to Plaza or NoDa to get coffee in the morning. With the area growing so fast, it just makes sense.”
15th Street Market will be open to the public on Saturday in Optimist Park. It brings an additional food and beverage component to an area already thriving with small businesses and artists. Visitors to Area 15 and surrounding neighbors will have a place to play a round of ping-pong and also to pick up a six-pack, grab a beer on tap or enjoy a snack.
Local beer on tap will include Birdsong Brewing’s Rewind Lager, D9’s Hakuna Matata Tropical IPA, NoDa Brewing’s NoDaJito, Olde Mecklenburg Brewery’s Copper Altbier, Sugar Creek Brewing Co.’s Porter and Unknown Brewing’s Pre-Game Session Ale. Lenny Boy Brewing Co.’s Lost Rose and Wake Up Call kombuchas will also be offered on tap. Alkaline water will be sold by the gallon, and CBD coffee will be available.
Grab-and-go snacks will include chips, drinks, protein bars, candy, charcuterie and cheese, sandwiches and salads by Something Classic and muffins and pastries by Nova’s Bakery. King of Pops will also be sold, as well as CBD oils and tinctures.
15th Street Market will also offer free wifi for those who prefer to work outside of the office. If you’re here to play instead, you’ll probably gravitate more toward the ping-pong, life-size Jenga, the hook and ring toss game or life-size Connect 4.
The interior space is bright and shiny, with new metallic epoxy floors by United Floor Coatings. The new Beech countertops were outsourced by Carolina Urban Lumber and custom-made. Rotating local art will cover the walls, beginning with an installment from Art by Abel, another Area 15 tenant.
An outside patio will include railing all the way around with stools. The yard will eventually be fenced in to allow patrons to move around the area with their alcohol. Cozzolino said the market will regularly feature live music on a raised deck outside. Patrons will be free to bring their lawn chairs, play corn hole and enjoy the entertainment, he said.
In fact, at Saturday’s grand opening celebration, music will be performed by Liam & The Nerdy Blues. Big City Bites food truck will be on site as well, so come hungry.
The neighbors are already excited about what the market will do for the area.
“15th Street Market is already making an impact on our building, even before opening,” said Lori Konawalik, owner of Mac Tabby Cat Cafe. “The space, and its owner Adam, both have great energy and a fun vibe that is just perfect for Area 15. The food options, ping-pong tables and beer selection fill a need at this end of North Davidson Street that was previously missing. We are so happy to have them as neighbors and are equally excited to see our awesome building serve even more good people of Charlotte.”
