The fall season only officially began on Saturday, but the fall beers have already been flowing for more than a month at some local breweries.

Ready to get in on the fun? We reached out to every brewery and cidery in the area to find out what seasonal brews you should keep an eye out for this fall.

Style: Märzen (duh)

ABV: 5%

Tasting Notes: This traditional, easy-drinking, Bavarian-style lager features toasty, malty notes and a medium body.

Raisin Up

Style: American Porter

ABV: 7.1%

Tasting Notes: This lightly salted oatmeal raisin porter is brewed using more than 100 pounds of pureed raisins for a mouthwatering finish that tastes just like an actual oatmeal raisin cookie.

Wake Up Porter 

Style: American Porter

ABV: 5.8%

Tasting Notes: This coffee vanilla porter is brewed using local coffee beans (the Sumatra Lingtong roast from Central Coffee Co.), local malt (the Dark Munich Malt from Carolina Malt House in Cleveland, NC) and Madagascar vanilla beans.

Availabilty: On draft and in cans, September – November.

Bourbon Barrel-Aged St. Tuber 

Style: Belgian-style Dubbel

ABV: 7.8%

Tasting Notes: Reminiscent of Grandma’s sweet potato pie… plus a little bit of bourbon. This beer is brewed using local sweet potato puree from Snow Hill, NC.

Availabilty: On draft and in cans, November – December.

Blue Blaze Brewing

Alpine Wiesen Oktoberfest Ale

Style: Märzen

ABV: 5.6%

Tasting Notes: A light, toasted malt gives way to a medium hop presence, aroma and flavors from German Noble hops.

Availability: On draft and in cans late August through late October.

Mary’s Monster Fall Spice Ale

Style: Amber Ale

ABV: 5.8%

Tasting Notes: This rich, deep amber ale is brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. It’s also spookily named in honor of Frankenstein author Mary Shelley — ideal for the Halloween season.

Availability: On draft through the fall season.

Conquer the Route Bourbon Barrel-Aged Chocolate Stout

Style: Stout

ABV: 9%

Tasting Notes: This boozy stout is named for Alison Levine, a history-making polar explorer, and is made with Cholaca pure organic liquid cacao. It’s then aged in bourbon barrels for a rich flavor profile that will warm you up on a cool fall day.

Availability: The bottle release will be on Tuesday, September 25. The beer will be available on draft for a limited time after the release.

Pumking (Southern Tier Brewing Company)

Style: Imperial Ale

ABV: 8.6%

Tasting Notes: This boozy brew tastes like a beer-infused bite of pumpkin pie. It features pumpkin pie spices along with notes of vanilla, roasted pecans, clove and even (somehow) buttery pie crust.

Availability: On draft and in bottles through October, or while supplies last.

NOTE: Pumking variations include Cold Press Coffee Pumking (8.6% ABV), Chai Tea Infused Pumking (8.6% ABV) and Rum Barrel-Aged Pumking (13.4% ABV).

Harvest Ale (Southern Tier Brewing Company)

Style: Special ESB Ale

ABV: 6.7%

Tasting Notes: Expect caramel malts and spicy pine notes, thanks to four varieties of fresh hops — as well as overtones of crisp grapefruit.

Availability: On draft and in bottles through October, or while supplies last.

Warlock (Southern Tier Brewing Company)

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 8.6%

Tasting Notes: This seasonal beer is a deep black color with hints of garnet, and features a pumpkin pie flavor laced with coffee and dark chocolate.

Availability: On draft and in bottles through October, or while supplies last.

Festbier (Victory Brewing Company)

Style: Märzen 

ABV: 5.6%

Tasting Notes: Victory Brewing Company brewed this Oktoberfest-inspired ale using imported German malts and a decoction brewing process. The result is a subtly sweet beer with a delicate malt nose.

Oktoberfest Märzen

Style: Märzen

ABV: 5.4%

Tasting Notes: This eagerly anticipated seasonal release is brewed with Vienna, Munich, Caramel and Wheat malts for a toasty flavor and a rich copper color. Noble Czech Saaz hops add bitterness to balance out the bread-y malt for a clean finish.

Availability: Released September 28. Available on draft throughout the fall season.

King Don’s Pumpkin Ale

Style: Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 5.5%

Tasting Notes: This annual release is brewed using five different barley styles as well as Magnum hops, ginger, allspice, nutmeg, clove and fresh pumpkin. The result is a smooth, easy-drinking brew with all the pumpkin pie flavors you know and love.

Head of the Horseman

Style: Imperial Ale

Tasting Notes: This Imperial Pumpkin Spiced Ale features a malty body and notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, cardamom and (of course) pumpkin… plus a warm booziness that you’re sure to appreciate as temperatures start to drop.

Cranberry & Ginger Saison

Style: Saison

ABV: 5.5%

Tasting Notes: Expect the standard saison flavors you know and love from Divine Barrel, with the addition of ginger root and cranberry puree.

Availability: To be released in October.

Roasted Butternut Squash & Maple Porter

Style: Porter

ABV: 6.8%

Tasting Notes: This porter is brewed with butternut squash and maple syrup for an utterly unique autumnal aroma and flavor that you have to try for yourself.

Availability: To be released in October.

NOTE: Divine Barrel will also be releasing a rum barrel-aged version of this same brew, to be released on October 27.

Apple & Caraway Gose

Style: Gose

ABV: 4.6%

Tasting Notes: Caraway is also known as “meridian fennel” or “Persian cumin,” and its seeds are aromatic with a subtly licorice-like flavor. Divine Barrel will brew this creative gose using caraway seeds in the boil and apple puree in the secondary for a seasonal brew unlike any other we’ve seen to date.

Style: Breakfast Stout

Tasting Notes: This is a special Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup-inspired version of Heist Brewery’s breakfast stout, Brunch Junkie. It’s brewed with peanut butter powder, brownie mix and actual Reese’s cups.

Availability: This beer will be released for Halloween, then will be available on draft in the taproom for a limited time (until it runs out!).

Yucatan Stout

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 8.5%

Tasting Notes: This spicy-yet-smooth stout is brewed with habaneros, cinnamon and vanilla. It’s got a medium heavy body (which hides the ABV — beware!) and features notes of chocolate as well as heat from the peppers.

Availability: Typically, High Branch releases this brew twice a year. It’s available on draft and in cans through the fall season while supplies last.

Sticky Situation Cinnamon Bun Stout

Style: Stout

Tasting Notes: Brewed with molasses, vanilla beans and cinnamon sticks — as well as a complex grain bill featuring flaked oats, biscuit malt, honey malt, chocolate malt, caramel malt and roasted barely — this sweet stout tastes just like a cinnamon bun.

Lawtoberfest Märzen

ABV: 6.3%

Tasting Notes: This traditional Bavarian-inspired lager uses German malts for a freshly-baked-bread flavor, balanced by a subtle hop addition and some toffee sweetness.

Plea Bargain Pecan Brown Ale

Style: Brown Ale

ABV: 6.2%

Tasting Notes: This brown ale is rich and dark with flavors of pecan pie, nuts, dark chocolate and a hint of coffee for a truly indulgent fall drinking experience.

Availability: In cans and on draft September through the winter season.

The Executioner Imperial Pumpkin Stout

Style: Imperial Stout

ABV: 9.2%

Tasting Notes: The Executioner is right — this stout will take you out if you’re not careful! This high-ABV fall beer is warm and boozy, brewed with pumpkin, spices and vanilla.

Tasting Notes: Lighter than a traditional Oktoberfest Märzen, Lenny Boy’s seasonal Festbier is closer to a Pilsner-style lager. It’s crisp, clean and crushable — meaning you could definitely crush a few of these easy-drinking brews in one sitting.

Ground Up

Style: Coffee Stout

ABV: 5.3%

Tasting Notes: This beer was brewed in collaboration with Counter Culture Coffee out of Durham, NC. It’s a smooth stout rich in chocolate, as well as caramel and cherry flavors.

Tasting Notes: A full-bodied beer brewed with German Bach yeast, German malts (including Vienna, Munich and Pilsner) and — yup, you guessed it — German hops. The beer’s malty sweetness is balanced by a crisp, dry finish.

Gordgeous

Style: Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 6.4%

Tasting Notes: Rather than using the typical blend for pumpkin beverages, NoDa Brewing uses whole seed spices that the brewers crack themselves — including allspice, cardamom and freshly shaven whole ginger root.

Jazz Hands

Style: Oatmeal Coffee Breakfast Porter

ABV: 5.5%

Tasting Notes: This rich porter is brewed with a heap of oats and cold conditioned on City Lights Coffee from Central Coffee Co. in Plaza Midwood. It’s one of the first brews from Resident Culture’s new brewer Peter Grochowski, who recently joined the RC team from Foothills Brewing (who you may know as the creators of Sexual Chocolate Russian Imperial Stout).

Availability: On draft from the end of September through the remainder of the fall season.

Salud Cerveceria

Head brewer Dustin Di Lorenzo confirmed that the brewery has no plans to brew any beers that are specifically fall-inspired this season. That being said, you can’t go wrong when you order Glunty, a rye lager brewed with Riverbend Pils and Rye and hopped with Crystal Hops.

Flash Gourdon

Style: Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 7.5%

Tasting Notes: Twenty-Six Acres begins brewing this fall beer in their pilot system in late summer so it’s ready by the first week of September. The seasonal brew has a deep orange hue in the glass and features your favorite pumpkin pie flavors (cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg and cloves) as well as a hint of ginger.

Availability: On draft through the fall season.

Wild Blossom Cider

2161 Hawkins St.

Technically, Wild Blossom Cider doesn’t feature any specifically fall-inspired ciders (yet!), but their Brut cider has a crisp, tart, apple taste that’s reminiscent of that happy, bubbly feeling you get when you go apple picking.

BOToberfest

Style: Lager

ABV: 5.5%

Tasting Notes: This Helles-style lager is brewed with German-grown barley malted by Epiphany Craft Malt in Durham, NC. It’s light, crisp, and reminiscent of the traditional Bavarian beers served at modern-day Oktoberfest celebrations in Germany.

Availability: On draft late September/early October through the fall season.

Sweater Weather

Style: English-Style ESB

ABV: 5.4%

Tasting Notes: Who doesn’t love a malty, English-style ESB to warm them up on a cool fall evening? This seasonal brew combines caramel and chocolate malt notes with hints of dark fruit for an ale as cozy as your favorite sweater.

Availability: On draft late September/early October through the fall season.

Witch’s Tit Pumpkin Ale

Style: Pumpkin Ale

ABV: 6.5%

Tasting Notes: This has to be, hands down, my favorite name out of all of these fall beers. It’s brewed with freshly picked pumpkins from a local farm, as well as York Chester Brewing Company’s own unique pumpkin spice blend.

Availability: On draft September – November.
